Graduating UEP 2025–2026 – Grateful and Ready
Over the past two weeks, I had the incredible opportunity to graduate from the UEP 2025–2026 program. (Union Education Program)
UEP challenged me, absolutely. Not just in knowledge, but in perspective. It brings together members from different workplaces, backgrounds, and experiences, and reminds you why unions matter in the first place, people!
As a young, disabled member advocating on the National Human Rights Committee, education has always meant, Access. Opportunity. Voice.
Over the last year in this program, I’ve deepened my understanding of:
-
Worker advocacy
-
Health & safety systems
-
Human rights in the workplace
-
Conflict resolution
-
Member engagement
But more importantly, I was surrounded by passionate members across the country who also care so deeply about building stronger, safer workplaces.
I am beyond grateful for the mentors, facilitators, and fellow members who shared their wisdom and experience.
Now comes the part I’m most excited about.. applying what I’ve learned and bringing it back home!!!!
Education only matters if we use it.
I can’t wait to continue sharing, growing, and standing alongside members who need support.
Thank you to everyone who believes in education as a tool for empowerment. 🤍

Facilitating a 5-Day Social Steward Course
Full Circle Moment 🤍
This past week, immediately following UEP, I had the honour of co-facilitating a 5-day Social Steward Course in Harrison Hotsprings, BC.
There is something incredibly special about stepping into a facilitation role, especially when you remember being the participant in the chair, eager to learn.
Over five days, we spoke about
-
Mental health awareness
-
Member support systems
-
Crisis response
-
Active listening
-
Building trust in the workplace
What stood out to me most was the courage in the room. Members opening up. Asking hard questions. Sharing experiences. Wanting to be better supports for their coworkers.
That is what solidarity looks like & it makes me damn happy!
Facilitating is never about having all the answers. It’s about holding space, encouraging growth, and reminding members they are not alone.
To be trusted in that role is something I don’t take lightly.
These past two weeks have reminded me why I get involved as much as I can.
Education strengthens us.
Conversation connects us.
Health & Safety starts with people feeling heard, and being seen.
I am so proud of every participant who stepped into any educational, ready to grow.
Now, it’s time to apply and keep building!
Forever In Solidarity,
Ashley May
